From this weekend, football fans at the Royal Oak in Archway will be able to watch live Premiership matches on the new Sky 3D service.

Using the fetching glasses now familiar from box-office favourites "Avataar" and "Up", viewers will be able to get up-close and personal to the 3D action.

The glasses will cost £1 a pair (a pair of blue and red shades from the back of an old TV Times won't work, apparently) and can be kept and reused at subsequent games.

According to Sky, over a thousand pubs and clubs across the UK and Ireland have already signed up for Sky 3D, with the Royal Oak claiming to be the first in North London to do so.

The 3D service will be launched on Saturday with the Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea at 12.45pm.The channel will then show at least a further

five Premier League games before the end of the

current season on Sunday 9th May. Sky have already secured the rights to show matches from this summer's World Cup in 3D, along with matches from the Coca-Cola League.

Landlord John Lally hopes that the new 3D equipment will boost his matchday sales, but not everyone is convinced about the benefits of 3D. Some fans are concerned that football is not an appropriate medium for 3D broadcast, being a fast-paced game that the cameras may not be able to capture.

Sky 3D is not yet available to home viewers, but will be rolled out later this year. Viewers will need a Sky HD+ box, a 3D-ready TV set and a 3D package from Sky, as well as the obligatory nerd-chic glasses.

Will you be heading to Archway instead of Emirates Stadium this season to try to get closer to the action? Let us know how you get on!

Irony of ironies, he actually scored a goal in the match I saw. Won Villa the match. That probably dates the event in question!

It was probably just Gareth Southgate shrinking into obscurity after his calamitous penalty miss at Euro 96...

That's funny - when I went to my first professional football match, I thought the players were all amazingly small. Tiny Gareth Southgate! Or perhaps they were just far away....

You think that's a joke, my gran really thought that for years. When we took her to a real football match she was amazed how big they all were.

It's not a TV broadcast, you know - Sky just put the little men in a box for you and make them run around.
