If you want to buy into a piece of Highgate’s literary heritage, the house where the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the novelist J B Priestley lived is for sale.
The nine-bedroom, grade II* listed mansion in The Grove has a price tag of £8,750,000 and was built by William Blake during the Restoration period.
Coleridge, one of the founders of the Romantic movement, who wrote the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, lived in the house from 1823 to his death in 1834.
During his time there it became a place of pilgrimage for the eminent literary figures of the day, including Wordsworth and Lamb.
In the 20th century, J B Priestley, author of such well known works as The Good Companions and An Inspector Calls, moved in.
The house, situated on the brow of Highgate Hill – one of the highest points of London – is being marketed by Savills of Hampstead and boasts panelled rooms, a staircase and a Coleridge Room.
There are pictures of the house here.
