Whether you're a spectator, an casual player or a gym regular, there are plenty of sporting opportunities in Highgate for all bodies.

Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath are both popular spots for jogging. If you're keen to try running and find that a club helps your motivation, you might like to check out Synergy Running Club based in Crouch End. The group has beginners and intermediates group runs on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and provides training advice and support.

Cross country runners aged 11 and up can join Highgate Harriers, based at Parliament Hill athletics track. The club competes in all  major County, Area and National cross country championship and the London Inter Club Challenge.

Highgate Cricket Club compete in the Middlesex County Cricket League and the 1987 league, and plays at Highgate Cricket Ground, off Park Road. The team are hoping for promotion to Division two next season, with everything still to play for this summer.

Afficionados of the leather and willow also have the opportunity to watch or join Hornsey Cricket Club, based at the Club House on Tivoli Road in Crouch End, or North London Cricket Club, based in Crouch End Playing Fields on Montenotte Road.

Fans of al-fresco exercise might enjoy the ten-piece outdoor gym  in Elthorne Park. It's completely free of charge, and features weatherproof versions of equipment commonly found in indoor gyms such as cross trainers, exercise bikes and benches for leg presses and lateral pull-downs.

Elthorne Park is also the location of the Kickz programme run by Arsenal In The Community, a charitable foundation providing sports and social inclusion oppotunities in the local area. Their football activities for young people will be running throughout the summer and beyond.

If you prefer your gym equipment housed under a roof, Virgin Active in Crouch End offers both group and individual exercise programmes, and has its own pool and spa facilities to keep you looking and feeling your best. There's also a recently refurbished branch of LA Fitness on Highgate Road, or try Highgate Fitness Studios on Archway Road for classes in Tai Chi, Kettlebell fitness or self-defence.

Swimmers shouldn't forget classes and free swimming at Archway Leisure Centre. Remember to check the holiday timetable for lane swimming and lesson times. The leisure centre also has a gym with fixed and free weights, personal trainers on hand to get you to your fitness goals, and a health suite with sauna and steam to help you relax and unwind afterwards.
