Thanks to its well known cemetary, Highgate has long been seen as a suitable setting for vampire fiction. The story of the Highgate Vampire was a popular urban legend that reached full whoop in 1970, when TV reports prompted a mob of 'hunters' to swarm the cemetary, believing there to be a supernatural entity inside it. Unsurprisingly, no undead trace was ever found.

But that hasn't stopped plenty of writers from picking up the tale, with the latest being young adult author Mia James. Her latest novel By Midnight begins as many such stories do with the heroine, April, finding herself uprooted from her friends and previously happy life, and thrust into an alien environment, in this case, Highgate, where she faces that teenage nightmare: a new school in the middle of term where she knows nobody.

Of course, things don't stay dull for very long, and April soon finds that there's more to this London suburb that meets the eye: you've guessed it - vampires! Building on the legends of vampire sightings in the cemetary, it weaves a gripping yarn of mystery, romance, anger and fear!
