Tube strikes called off as tribunal finds for driver

Highgate's daily commute will be, if not easy, then at least no more difficult than usual next week as the tube strikes threatened by the RMT union have been called off. A tribunal found that tube driver Arwyn Thomas had been unfairly dismissed by London Underground last year, and following his reinstatement the union agreed to call off strikes.

Highgate commuters: we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.
A series of strikes were due to disrupt the network from Monday. Thomas was sacked for alleged unacceptable behaviour during a strike day last year. The tribunal found that Mr Thomas was not blameless, but that "no reasonable employer" would have sacked him over the incident and that LU should have explored other options for disciplinary action.
Thomas will now spend six months suspended from his job without pay, before returning to LU in a non-driving role. A wave of strikes called from Monday will not go ahead as a result. Highgate commuters will therefore face only the usual problem of living on the Northern Line this week.
