Smoke free signage or Highgate businesses face £200 penalty

A Haringey Council letter sent to businesses this week warns that it is an offence under the Health Act 2006 to not display a smoke free sign at the entrance to their premises.
Businesses have seven days from receipt of the letter to display the required signage.
After that date, council enforcement officers may inspect the premises and take action where signs are missing.
Failure to display the sign may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice for £200.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:"These signs are there to protect employees who want to work in a smoke-free environment. If signs are not displayed employees can feel obliged to accept people smoking to avoid being accused of making a fuss. The legislation is quite clear: working in a smoke free environment is a legal right, not a privilege, whatever the size of the business."
