Regular users of the A1 near Jackson's Lane in Highgate may well be unsurprised to learn that the tricky box junction on the Archway Road is the capital's most lucrative, bringing in over £1million in fines for TfL last year.

Motorists caught on camera stopping in the box junction are served an automatic £120 penalty charge notice (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days). The busy road junction at Jackson's Lane often catches out the unwary, as it sits on a 4-way traffic junction with bus stops nearby, and drivers are often caught out by sudden changes in the traffic flow.

Campaigners are now calling on TfL to install warning signs at the junction, saying that the road layout and bus stops often make it difficult for drivers to see if the box is clear or not. People who are not local to the area are particularly likely to be caught out by tricky lane changes.

TfL defended its use of penalty charges on boxes, saying they were necessary to keep junctions clear and traffic moving. London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon called on TfL to keep box junctions clearly marked and visible, in order to ensure motorists are not unfairly fined.

If you believe you have received a PCN in error, you can challenge the charge online here. Drivers' groups have set up advice sites on challenging box junction PCNs - if you feel you may have a case, see this site for further advice.
