Got a transport problem? Fix it with Fix My Transport!

A recent trip abroad and the attendant schlep back up to North London from the airport got us thinking about public transport in the UK and the myriad ways it could be improved - from broken Oyster readers to rude bus drivers and trains that never show up on time. Fortunately, there's now a simple way to report transport problems online, using the community website FixMyTransport.

TfL's new real-time bus information site is useful and really quite hypnotic
FixMyTransport was developed by the team at MySociety, who also brought us Parliamentary watchdog site Theyworkforyou, local road reporting system fixmystreet and community volunterring site pledgebank. Launched this autumn, it offers a simple interface to allow people to report problems by station name, route number or postcode and share information about recurring problems with both transport companies and other site users.
Created by freelance web programmer Louise Crow, FixMyTransport uses the idea of crowdsourcing to share information about known problems and draw attention to recurrent issues. The site can be used as both a place to check for transport problems, and a lobbying forum encouraging transport companies to act. Positive stories about pleasant journeys and resolved issues can also be shared on the site.
Problems recently reported in Highgate include an driver on the 134 bus route not issuing an onward ticket when the service terminated early, and vibrations damaging property near the Overground lines. Despite the Northern Line's miserable reputation, there are no problems yet reported on the site with local tubes or tube stations. A mobile version is currently being developed, which will hopefully make problems (and praise) even easier to report.
Transport for London has recently launched its own mobile information service to help passengers stay up to date with bus travel - text your bus stop code (written on the stop itself) to 87287 or enter your street or postcode at this site. You'll receive real-time information on exactly where your bus is (and even if you're not waiting for a bus, the live map itself is strangely mesmerising).
