Edible Garden Open Day comes to Highgate and beyond this weekend

Two things Highgate People loves doing are growing things and eating them, so we were delighted to heat that the UK's largest Edible Gardens Open Day is taking place this weekend. Almost 50 community gardens around London supported by Capital Growth will be opening their gates to visitors this Saturday (September 3), and many will host workshops, discussions and entertainment in addition to the chance to see local urban food gardens.

How does your edible garden grow? Find out this Saturday!
Local participating spaces include the popular Food From The Sky garden on the rooftop of Thorntons Budgens (21-23 the Broadway, Crouch End). The event will feature a tour of the garden giving its history, a nature trail and treasure hunt, seed games and information on how to collect seeds. Access from Crouch Hall Road at the rear of the shop.
The community garden at Girdlestone Estate (N19 5DR, between Bredgar Road, Dartmouth Park Hill, Magdala Avenue and Highgate Hill) will also be open to the public on Saturday. Light refreshments will be served from 11:30am, and the winners of the Best Sunflower competition for children will be announced. Watch out for a special guest!
Further afield, capital growth will be organising a walking tour of spaces in the East of London, and a cycling tour taking in growing spaces in Hornsey, Archway, Finsbury Park, Stroud Green, Stoke Newington, Dalston, Shoreditch, and Old Street. Follow the links for more information and to book a space.
Capital Growth is a partnership between London Food Link, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, and the Big Lottery's Local Food Fund, and aims to give local people information about growing food in urban spaces. Last year's inaugural event proved very popular with aspiring gardens, and this year's looks set to be even bigger. A downloadable booklet giving information on the event can be found here.
