Digging in the dirt: report problem roadworks online

Roadworks seem to be a fact of London life - hardly a week goes by without some kind of road maintenance or utility upgrade appearing on our city streets. But although they're a regular occurence, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has just launched a new initiative to improve standards and keep roadworks safe and considerate.
"Badly-managed roadworks are a headache for Londoners and a drain on our economy," says Mayor Johnson. "I have just introduced new, tighter standards for roadworks and made it easier for you to tell us when you spot sloppy examples so we can take action to sort it out."
The Mayor of London's Roadworks Pledge says that works should be tidy and safe for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users; always explain what's happening; take up as little road/pavement space as possible; and help keep London moving by working outside peak hours and completing works as quickly as possible.
Transport for London has pledged that all roadworks will meet these new standards. If you spot a set of works that' don't, report them directly online using the site tfl.gov.uk/roadworks. You don't need to know the exact address - just click on the map and your report will be sent to the right authority.
Next year, the Mayor's office hopes to introduce charges for roadwaorks, creating an incentive to complete works quickly and with minimum disruption. Until then, this new reporting system should help ensure local authorities and utility companies all meet the standards for considerate working.
Got problem roadworks near you? Let TfL know on the site, and let other highgatepeople know here!
